A Day in Burano

Visiting the tiny island of Burano proved to be one of the best days of our Venetian trip. 

Google Burano and you're presented with hundreds of images of multi-coloured, chocolate box houses clustered around winding canals and cobbled squares. I was sold immediately (blame Pinterest). It's also the lace capital of Venice and famed for its intricate creations, so everywhere you turn there's a lace umbrella, fan or nightdress blowing in the breeze. About 40 minutes by boat from Venice itself (you can hire a water taxi or get a vaporetto via neighbouring Murano), it doesn't look or feel like much when you first climb off the boat on arrival... For a moment, I got that sinking feeling that perhaps everything on google was photoshopped and my enthusiasm had been unwarranted. 

My fears didn't last long. A short walk down towards the 'main' street of the island and you're met with picture-perfect cafes, pizzerias and shops nestled alongside the canal, with multi-coloured alleyways at every turn. It's buzzy while still being peaceful and a nice mix of locals, tourists and weekending Italians chatting with aperol spritzes. We sat outside in the square, ate pizzas drenched in mozzarella and artichokes, bought some obligatory linen lavender bags and lace table cloths between us (not as old-lady-like as it sounds I promise), before reluctantly making our way back to the jetty. If you're ever in Venice, make sure to dedicate an afternoon to Burano's rainbow streets.
